Nestled in the garden between Campos de Morais Palace and the Temple of Bom Jesus de Fão, at the southern end of Alameda do Bom Jesus, you’ll find this sculptural piece by Ascânio Maria Martins Monteiro, simply known as Ascânio MMM.
Hailing from Fão (1942), the sculptor now resides in Brazil where he has his studio. Recognized worldwide, he also has another sculpture in Fão, in Largo do Cortinhal, called “PIRAMIDAL 12.5” (1999).
Internationally renowned, he has another sculpture in Fão, at Largo do Cortinhal, called “PIRAMIDAL 12.5” (1999). Beyond these two pieces, Ascânio boasts a vast collection of public and private works, exhibited in art galleries and public spaces.
With a modernist expression, in the vein of Constructivism, he has traversed various phases where he asserts that architecture and art should come together to provoke the viewer’s “gaze” from multiple perspectives, allowing them to discover and feel new impressions about the same piece as they explore it.
His principles, drawn from the work of Corbusier, maintain a dimensional trace, proportional to the human scale and the location where they are installed. This passion for architecture has been with him since childhood, as it was in the Pinhal de Ofir that he discovered modernism as a boy, with the new trends of other architects, inspiring him to pursue a degree.
Crafted from aluminum and screws, this is one of his major public works, donated in 2021 by the artist to the municipality of Esposende as part of the renovation works under the Urban Regeneration Action Plan (PARU).
Ascânio MMM was awarded the Medal of Cultural Merit on August 19, 2022, by the Esposende City Council, in recognition of his work and as a gesture of gratitude for the vast cultural and artistic heritage he has created throughout his life.
